Fifty Grand (Cincizeci de bătrâne)

Nicu Russu was a prolific Romanian illustrator. He illustrated hundreds of book covers and was also a regular illustrator for Arici Pogonici and Luminiţa. He made four adventure and science fiction comics for Cutezătorii between 1970 and 1972. These included the jungle comic 'Megalozoon' (script by Vasile Manuceanu) and 'Omul-radar' (script by Horia Arama).

For Éditions Stadio He drew several comic books based on novels by Ernest Hemingway ('Fifty Grand'), Jules Verne ('Dick Sand, A Captain at Fifteen') and Edgar Rice Burroughs ('Tarzan'). A new law prevented Russu to receive money from his book publications, since he was not an "official artist" with tge Union of Plastic Artists. Devastated and betrayed by the communist regime, Nicu Russu took his own life in 1974.
