'The Family Next Door'.
Robert W. Satterfield was a Cleveland cartoonist who signed his work as Bob Satterfield or just simply Sat. Born in 1875 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, he began his career selling cartoons to the Cleveland Press in 1896. He formed the art department of the Kansas City World from 1898 to 1902 and was subsequently hired as a fulltime cartoonist for the Cleveland News. Inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's passion for hunting and the subsequent introduction of the Teddy bear, motivated him to create his cartoon panel 'Sat's Bear', which was a feature of Cleveland's daily life.
Satterfield's political cartoons were also syndicated to local newspapers like the Binghamton Sun and the Rock Island Argus. He created the newspaper strips 'Oh, Thunder' (1915-1916) and the comic strip 'The Family Next Door' (Bonnet-Brown Syndicate, 1926-1928). In the 1920s, he also made the daily panel 'Days We'll Never Forget'. Satterfield self-published a collection of his cartoons called 'Fifty Cartoons by Satterfield' in 1913. It was limited to 150 signed and numbered copies and is quite rare.
Bob Satterfield should not be confused with the boxer Bob Satterfield (1923-1977).
