'Kommandant Madeleine' (Kuifje, issue #24, 1955).
Born in Antwerp, Armand Panis began his career drawing advertisements and doing glass paintings. Starting in 1936, he drew hundreds of stop comics under the pseudonym 'Klopstok' for, among others, Magazine Radio Antwerpen, Volk en Staat, Antwerpse Post and Kunst & Kultuur. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was one of the few Flemish political cartoonists to comment on current affairs. His work appeared in several Flemish-nationalist papers and magazines, including publications of the Flemish fascist party VNV.
'Klopstok'.
After World War II, Panis did illustrations in Libelle, Humoradio, Haardvriend and book illustrations for the publishers Piet Vink, Volk en Staat, J. Jansens, Die Keure and De Sikkel. For many years, he was the illustrator of the famous children's book series 'Historische Verhalen'. He was present in Kuifje, the Dutch-language version of Tintin magazine, with illustrations and short stories.
'Professor Kwit'.
In the monthlies De Volksmissionaris, Petit Missionnaire and Het Hart dat Heerst, Panis drew the comics 'Het Wezeke' and 'Te Paard voor Indië'. He drew two comic books with 'Professor Kwit' with scripts by Louis De Groof (1913-1996), published by Zuidnederlandse Uitgeverij in 1969. Pieter Jan Verstraete published a book about the work of Panis in 2007, called 'Armand Panis - Karikaturist en Tekenaar'.
