Ies Spreekmeester was born Isidore Leonard Spreekmeester in Amsterdam in 1914. He was an illustrator for magazines like De Waarheid, Het Parool, Het Vrije Volk, Vrij Nederland and Nieuw Israëlitisch Weekblad. He was also a courtroom artist for the broadcasting company NOS.
He was the author of several children's books in the mid 1940s, including 'Het boek van de vier kleur-pot-lo-den', 'Reinaard de Vos speelt voor huisbaas', 'Waarom de slak zijn huisje altijd met zich meedraagt', 'Het ijdele paardje' and 'Van de sneeuwman die niet smelten wilde'. He has also made drawings for the Amsterdam Zoo Artis.
Spreekmeester lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1952 and has subsequently lived in Hilversum, Naarden, Huizen and Blaricum before settling in the Frisian town Oldeholtpade, Weststellingswerf, in 1971. He made a comic strip called 'Bokwert' with writer Rink van der Velde for the local paper Leeuwarder Courant in the early 1980s. It was collected in a booklet in 1983. It was not his first comic; he had contributed a 'Pepspotter' to comics magazine Pep in the 1970s.
