André Veltkamp was born in Amsterdam. While studying Literature in the 1960s, he made a living as a comic artist. He published stories like 'Het Eiland Bicyclopia' in Soma 8, and 'Ralf' in Jeugdwerk Nu (1972-1973). He then worked as a teacher in Dutch language before becoming a teacher with the Nel Roos Academy and the Academy for Cabaret in 1981.
Velkamp was involved in the Amsterdam Theatre School from the early 1990s and was its director from 1997 until 2010. He developed the school into a breeding ground for professionals in all theatre fields, such as classic or modern dancer, actor, cabaret artist, choreographer, director, teacher, engineer, designer or production manager. He was additionally active as a drama expert for theatre productions by Paul de Leeuw, De Vliegende Panters, Lenette van Dongen, Plien & Bianca, Acda & De Munnik and Javier Guzman.
