Nikkie, by Peter Wienk

Dutch artist and painter Peter Wienk was born in Amsterdam, and began his career as an illustrator after escaping from captivity in East Germany in 1945. He worked of advertising agencies as well as the Toonder Studios, before landing a job with the Van Aften ad agency in 1947. There, Wienk met Eelco Harmsen van Beek, whose studio he joined in 1950 to assist on the artwork and coloring of the British 'Noddy' books by Enyd Blyton.

After Beek's death in 1953, Wienk continued to draw 'Noddy' for the next 17 years. By now operating through his own Studio Wienk, he additionally made features and illustrations, that appeared in Dutch, English and German newspapers. These included a series about the wonders of nature, and a text strip about a cat called 'Nikkie', of which 11 stories appeared during the 1950s.

In 1971 Wienk had a change of pace and went into insurances and financing. He eventually retired in the Nijmegen region, where he spent the rest of his years painting with various techniques. He has held several exhibitions with his wife, Nel Koenen.
