Family Tree by Signe Wilkinson

Signe Wilkinson is an American editorial cartoonist and newspaper comic artist. She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and received a BA in English. She initially worked as a reporter for the West Chester Daily Local News, and also worked for the Quakers and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. She eventually picked up cartooning, starting with freelance jobs for several Philadelphia and New York publications. She got a full-time job at the San Jose Mercury News in 1982, but has been affiliated with the Philadelphia Daily News since the mid-1980s.

Wilkinson additionally launched her syndicated daily comic strip 'Family Tree' with United Media on 21 November 2007. This family strip with an environmental conscience appeared in a daily and Sunday version. Wilkinson ended the strip on 27 August 2011. She has also drawn 'Shrubbery', a hybrid comic strip/cartoon that focused on both the botanical and political landscape plus cartoons for Organic Gardening magazine.

She was the first female cartoonist to with the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1992. She also received a Visionary Woman Award from Moore College of Art & Design in 2011. Signe Wilkinson served as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists in the mid-1990s.
