The Dutch cartoonist Dirk Arend was born in Katwijk aan Zee. In 1980 he began his career with the comic strip 'Jan Hagel' in Het Leidsch Dagblad. His best-known comic character is 'Olivier Flap'. It was the leading character in the 1990s children's monthly Happy voor Kids by publisher De Denker, for which Arend was the main artist with Henk van Munster. The character also appeared in the papers of the Buijze Persbladen and Telekids.
Dirk is an expert on classic Dutch comics and especially those that came from the Toonder Studio's. He has been a great help to the Lambiek website with identifying artwork and providing additional information for our section on Dutch Comics History.
