Bringing up Father by Vernon von Atta
'La Famille Illico' ('Bringing up Father' in French, L'Aurore, 11 January 1961). Translation: Salesman: "This one is special!" - Jiggs: "Really? I take one! Here's a new cooking book to add to your collection, dear." - Maggie: "Oh, you're so sweet!" - "101 Beef Recipes."

Vernon Van Atta Greene's first work in cartooning was for the Portland Telegram doing sports cartoons. In 1940, Greene broke into the pulp and comic book field, illustrating 'Shadow', 'Masked Lady' and 'Perry Mason'. He also spent six years ghosting 'Polly and Her Pals' for Cliff Sterrett. Upon the death of George McManus in 1954, Greene was engaged by King Features to pick up 'Bringing Up Father'. From 1957 on, Hy Eisman was ghost artist for 'Bringing Up Father'. In 1965, when Greene fell ill with cancer, he didn't want his syndicate to know about it, out of fear they would fire him. So Eisman drew the series every day, going to the hospital so Greene could put his signature on the artwork. Eventually his wife gave Eisman permission to just imitate her husband's handwriting. In 1965, Greene died. 'Bringing Up Father' was continued by Hal Campagna
