Marie Marcks was a German cartoonist and caricaturist. Recurring themes in her work were the Cold War politics, nuclear tests, the differences between East and West, the elderly and especially the equality of women and the struggle against traditional gender relations. She was an expert on the latter two subjects; she raised five children practically on her own and she managed to establish a unique position for herself in a profession dominated by men.

Marcks grew up in Berlin in an artistic environment, and received her first lessons from her mother, book illustrator Else Marcks-Penzig. She studied Architecture in Berlin and Stuttgart during the war, and began her career as a commercial artist and poster designer in post-war Heibelberg. She eventually turned to cartooning in the 1950s. Marcks worked as a political cartoonist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung for twenty years, and also published her work in Die ZEIT, Der Spiegel, Stern and Vorwärts. She also made illustrations for (children's) books. Her artistic legacy is preserved by the Wilhelm Busch Cartoon Museum in Hannover, where a retrospective exposition was opened in 2015.
