The real identity of the illustrator Priel remains unknown, but he was one of the main comic artists for the children's supplement of the socialist weekly Wij during the second half of the 1930s.
"Wij - Ons Werk, Ons Leven" was a weekly aimed at the Dutch workers' demographic, published by De Arbeiderspers in Amsterdam. The first issue appeared in January 1935, and the final issue during World War II, on 29 May 1942. From 3 July 1936 the magazine's subscribers were not only automatically insured against accidents(!), but also treated with a special children's supplement of eight pages. Edited by A.D. Hildebrand under pedagogic supervision of the legendary writer/teacher Theo Thijssen, the "Wij voor onze meisjes en jongens" (later renamed to Kleine Wij) was filled with tales in rhyme, (picture) stories, contests and handicraft sections. The mysterious Priel was at least present in the 1937-1938 issues with comics like 'Amin en zijn haan' (1937-1938) and 'De avonturen van Tub en Tobias' (1937). The latter, about a boy and his dog, appeared on the front cover.
Among the other comic artists and illustrators who worked for Kleine Wij were Rein Stuurman, Henk Rotgans, Huib de Ru, Piet Worm, Wim Bijmoer, Ger Sligte, William Timym, Joop de Groote, Co Egelie, Henk Kabos, Greetje Kroone and Toby Vos.
