Art by Kuniyoshi Utagawa.
Kuniyoshi Utagawa is a 19th-century Japanese painter and illustrator, who is likewise important in the development of Japanese comics, A.K.A. "manga". Other 19th-century Japanese painters and illustrators who were comic strip pioneers have been Kobayashi Eitaku, Hokusai, Kobayashi Kiyochika and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka.
In 1815, Kuniyoshi Utagawa illustrated his first book. In about 1829, his Ukiyo-e series 'Suikoden Nishikie' made him famous as a master of warrior pictures. Things went smoothly for Utagawa after that time and other series followed. 'Toto Meisho' is probably the best known. Later series include 'Miyamoto Musashino Kujirataiji', 'Soma no Furudairi' and 'Myoukai Kou Goju Sanbiki'. Utagawa's cartoon-like drawings also enjoyed great popularity in his time.
One of his pupils was Yoshitoshi Tsukioka.
