Popeye, by George Wildman
 'Popeye'.

After having worked as a commercial artist, George Wildman entered the comics field in 1969, when he joined Charlton Comics as an editor. He became managing editor in 1971 and eventually executive editor. Wildman has illustrated over ninety comic books featuring 'Popeye' between 1969 and 1977. He continued his work on E.C. Segar's famous creation for Western Publishing/Gold Key until 1984, and also made a 'Popeye' pop-up book for Random House. Other characters that Wildman drew for Charlton were Hanna-Barbera's 'The Jetsons', 'Yogi Bear' and 'Huckleberry Hound', Jay Ward's 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' and 'Underdog', and Al Fago's 'Atomic Mouse'.

Wildman left Charlton in 1984 and went on to draw many freelance cartoon projects. His comic book work included licensed material with characters from Disney, Hanna-Barbera, Harvey and Warner Bros. He did artwork for Marvel ('Heathcliff', 1987), Scholastic Entertainment, Henson, Time/Warner ('Animaniacs', 1994-1995) and the Disney Studios (inker for stories with Goofy, Mickey Mouse, Darkwing Duck, 1991-1995). He opened a commercial art and animation studio in Connecticut with his son Karl, and focused on computer animation, greeting cards and other products. George Wildman died at the age of 88 on 22 May 2016.
