Karran Eccles Wright, or Kay Wright for short, was born in 1919 in New York. He began his career in 1937 as an inbetweener for the Disney Studios, , working on animated films like 'Pinocchio’ (1940), 'Fantasia’ (1940) and 'Bambi’ (1942). He began doing comic book art in 1943, doing funny animal stories with characters like 'Giggle', 'Funnybone' and 'Moose-Mad Mice' for companies like ACG. Between 1947 and 1956 he was present at National/DC with more funny animal work, including 'The Fox and the Crow'. With scriptwriter George Stallings, he made a newspaper strip called 'Soapy Waters' between 1955 and 1957.
He began an association with Western Publishing in 1961, where he illustrated comics with licensed Hanna-Barbera characters like 'The Flintstones', 'Huckleberry Hound', 'Yogi Bear' and 'Snagglepuss', among others, until 1964. He also created comics based on Walter Lantz' 'Woody Woodpecker' and comic stories with 'Mickey Mouse' and 'Donald Duck' for the Disney Studios, that were published in foreign publications between 1963 and 1965. He then continued doing Disney comics for Gold Key, illustrating characters like 'Donald Duck', 'Beagle Boys', 'Moby Duck' and 'Super Goof'. He also illustrated many of the 'Junior Woodchucks' stories that Carl Barks scripted at the end of his career. He additionally inked Al Taliaferro's 'Donald Duck' daily in 1965. In 1977-78 Wright illustrated stories with Hanna-Barbera characters again, this time 'Flintstones', 'Top Cat' and 'Quickdraw McDraw'. He worked for Gold Key until 1984.
In 1954 he additionally returned to animation, working as an animator for Disney on films like 'Lady & the Tramp' (1955), 'The Truth About Mother Goose' (1957) , 'Sleeping Beauty' (1959) and '101 Dalmatians' (1960), as well as 'Winnie the Pooh' in the mid-1960s. He was an animator with Cambria Productions in the first half of the 1960s, working on 'Clutch Cargo', 'Captain Fathom' and 'The New 3 Stooges'. Between 1966 and 1978 he was associated with Filmation, working as a lay-out artist, animator and director on productions like 'Superman', 'Superboy', 'Batman', 'Journey Back To Oz', 'Treasure Island', 'Oliver Twist', 'Flash Gordon' (based on the creation by Alex Raymond) and 'Mighty Mouse' (originally created by Paul Terry). Then throughout the 1980s he was a producer on Hanna Barbera serials like 'The Smurfs', 'Pac Man', 'The Dukes', 'GoBots', 'The Flintstone Kids', 'Yogi Bear', 'Tom and Jerry Kids' and 'Droopy: Master Detective' (based on the original creation by Tex Avery). Kay Wright passed away in Valencia, California in 1999.
