Om mekaar in Dokkum
Self-taught artist Guido van Driel started his career as an illustrator for the student weekly magazine Folia, of the University of Amsterdam, in 1986. Since then, he has been illustrating for several newspapers and magazines, such as Het Parool, NRC Handelsblad and De Volkskrant. He made his comic debut in 1994, with 'Vis aan de Wand', followed by 'Mijnheer Servelaat Neemt Vakantie' in 1996. Both these books are characterized by a gloomy atmosphere.
In June 2000, his book 'De Fijnproever', a story set in the Amsterdam Red Light District, was published. His next comic, 'Toen we van de Duitsers verloren', about the Dutch defeat by Germany during the 1974 World Cup, was pre-published in newspaper Het Parool. The book, published by Oog & Blik was presented officially on November 7th, 2002, in Galerie Lambiek. Van Driel's next graphic novels were 'Om Mekaar in Dokkum' (2004), 'De Ondergang van Amsterdam' (2007) and 'Gasten' (2012).
Van Driel is also a director of documentaries and has worked on film projects like his own film 'In Suburbia Hollandiae'. His film adaptation of 'Om Mekaar in Dokkum' called 'De wederopstanding van een klootzak' is premiered at the 42nd International Film Festival in Rotterdam in January 2013.
