Albert Dubout was born in 1905 in Marseille, and studied arts in Nîmes and Montpellier. He published his first drawings in the Montpellier magazine L'Écho des Étudiants in 1923. Dubout moved to Paris in 1924, where he began making illustrations for several magazines and journals, including Satirix, Le Rire, Marianne, Éclats de Rire, L'Os Libre, Paris-Soir and Ici Paris.

Dubout's humorous drawings contained funny characters in strange situations, and have been popular throughout his entire career. Although Dubout made many lithographic prints, oil paintings and advertising illustrations for theaters and cinemas, his main occupation was illustrating books, such as poetry by François Villon, and novels by François Rabelais, Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux, Molière and Honoré De Balzac.
Albert Dubout was an influence on Marcel Denis, Serge Dutfoy and Wolinski.
