Nijntje, by Dick Bruna

Dick Bruna had a passion for drawing and painting from a very young age. After World War II, Bruna left school and went to London to become a publisher. A year later he left London for Paris, where he frequently visited the museums. The works of modern artists like Picasso, Matisse and Braque made a great impression on the young Dick Bruna, who still enjoyed painting and drawing. He then realized he wanted to become an artist and when he returned to The Netherlands he put his talents to use as an illustrator for the family business.

For years, Dick Bruna illustrated the covers for The Saint, James Bond, Simenon and Shakespeare in the Zwarte Beertjes pocket book series. He developed his own recognizable style. Now, Dick Bruna is one of the most famous creators of picture books in the world. He has written and illustrated almost 100 books. Some of his famous creations are 'Snuffie' the dog, 'Betje Big' ('Poppie Pig'), the bears 'Boris and Barbara', and, a favorite of all, 'Nijntje' ('Miffy') the white bunny. Miffy was appointed as New York City's Family Tourism Ambassador in 2003, to give the Big Apple a new appeal to children and European and Asian visitors. Dick Bruna's retirement was officially announced in August 2014.
