'Kaktus Bata'.
Veljko Kockar was born in Osijek and went to school in Belgrade. He began his career in 1938 drawing for Paja Patak (Donald Duck) magazine. He also published in the Belgrade newspapers Dom i svet and Bodljikavo prase. The papers were under German supervision during World War II, but none of Kockar's work can be labeled as propaganda. He created a funny comic strip about cactus people called 'Kaktus Bata', and gag panels depicting sexy girls.
Kockar was however executed by partisans in Belgrade in November 1944. He was only 24 years old. A collection of his work, from his first story ('Osveta kraljice Tao-Maj') to his final (the unfinished 'Kopača Zlata'), as well as a chronicle of his life and tragic fate, was published in 2009 under the title 'Veljko Kockar - Strip, život, smrt' ('Veljko Kockar - comics, life, death').
