Berni (or Bernie) Wrightson is a famous artist of horror comics. He did a correspondence course with the Famous Artists School in Connecticut and began his career as an editorial cartoonist of the Baltimore Sun in 1968. He joined DC Comics the same year, and settled in New York. His first comics appeared in DC's 'House of Mystery' and Marvel's 'Chamber of Darkness'. He created 'Swamp Thing' with writer Len Wein in the House of Secrets comic book, and the feature got its own title in 1972. He worked on the comic until 1974, the year he joined Warren Publishing. He formed a studio with fellow artists Barry Windsor-Smith, Jeff Jones and Michael Kaluta and cooperated on magazines like Heavy Metal, Eerie and Creepy.

Wrightson went on to develop himself as a master of adapting stories by Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley and Stephen King. His adaptations of 'Frankenstein' and 'Cycle of the Werewolf' have become classics. Between 1988 and 1993, he cooperated on such series as 'Batman: The Cult' (DC), 'Punisher' (Marvel) and 'Captain Sternn: Running Out of Time' (Kitchen Sink Press). In 1997, he returned to the Batman character with the 'Batman/Aliens' crossover at DC and Dark Horse.
