The Bunch, from Powerpak Comics, by Aline Kominsky 1979

Aline Kominsky (born Aline Goldsmith) is an autobiographical and feminist underground comix pioneer. Besides her own comix, she has worked on several comics with her husband Robert Crumb. Kominsky draws in a "fast" style, without much attention to detail or overall impression, but she easily makes up for this by her very witty observations and twists and turns.

She was born in Long Island, New York, into a middle class Jewish family. As a teenager, she turned to drugs and the counterculture, and eventually went to study art at the Cooper Union. She settled in Tucson, Arizona, with her first husband, Carl Kominsky. The marriage didn't last long, but she kept the surname of her ex. She began making comics in the early 1970s, when she relocated to San Francisco.

Kominsky contributed to feminist publications like Wimmen's Comix, and started a similar title called Twisted Sisters with Diane Noomin and others. She had her own title with Kitchen Sink Press between 1979 and 1981, called 'The Bunch's Power Pak Comics'. In San Francisco, she also met Robert Crumb, whom she married in 1978. The Crumbs' best-known collaborative work is the autobiographical 'Dirty Laundry' comic book series. It became a real family effort when daughter Sophie, who was born in 1981, also began contributing her own work. Collections of Aline's work include 'Love That Bunch' (Fantagraphics, 1990) and 'The Complete Dirty Laundry Comics'. She and her family have also cooperated on strips for The New Yorker.

Aline Kominsky was editor of the alternative comics anthology Weirdo during the 1980s. The Crumb family has lived in a medieval chateau in the south of France since the early 1990s, where Aline has focused more on painting. However, she published the freewheeling memoir 'Need More Love: A Graphic Memoir' in 2007.
