Born in Hilversum, Piet Wijn took courses from the Rex drawing school in Amsterdam. Wijn started his career in comics in 1947 working for the Marten Toonder Studios. He initially worked at the animation department, but he soon moved to the comics studios.
De Zwarte Hertog (Tom Poes Weekblad, 4-8-1948)
For Tom Poes Weekblad, he made a couple of historic stories with text by Walling Dijkstra, such as 'De Zwarte Hertog' (1948), 'De Moorse Tovenaar' (1948-49), Manuello Y Gonza' (1948-49) and 'Verowin' (1950-51).

Wijn began to work for the studios on a freelance base in 1949. In 1951, he developed the text strip 'Aram van de Eilanden' in the same weekly. However, the magazine folded the same year. 'Aram' then appeared in several national and international newspapers, syndicated by Swan Features until 1960.

In addition to 'Aram', Wijn drew 'Frank de Vliegende Hollander' for Het Parool (1955-56), as well as comic adaptations of 'Alleen op de Wereld' and 'De Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe'. He was also present in the magazine Olidin, for which he produced two stories of 'Dick Durfal' in 1960-61.
Aram - Het Zwaard van Palermo
Piet Wijn returned to the Toonder studios in the early 1960s, and began working anonymously on several famous series until the 1980s. He took over 'Holle Pinkel' from Andries Brandt in De Spiegel (1962-64). He was the sole artist on 'Koning Hollewijn' for De Telegraaf between 1964 and 1971, while he also cooperated on 'Kappie' between 1969 and 1972. His poetic drawings graced the 'Tom Poes' daily strip from 1971 until the end in 1986. Starting in 1969, he was the artist of 'Panda' for many years, a comic for which he did get the credits.
Puk en Poppedijn - De stippelvlinder
He launched 'Puk en Poppedijn' in 1964, and he wrote and drew eightteen episodes of this fairytale-like series for De Spiegel until 1968. From 1973 to 1975, he also drew nine episodes for De Prinses.
Gloria van Goes
From 1967 to 1969, Wijn appeared in the Dutch Donald Duck weekly with fourteen stories with the Disney character 'The Big Bad Wolf', and also three 'Little Hiawatha' stories. In 1973 he began a collaboration with the girl's magazine Tina, for which he illustrated series like 'Jennifer Scott' (text Andries Brandt, 1973-75), 'Heidi' (text Patty Klein, 1976-77), 'Gloria van Goes' (text Paul Deckers, 1977-78), 'Maartje' (1979-86) and 'De wachter van Maartenshuys' (1982). With Patty Klein, Wijn also made the comic 'Annemoon' for Okki between 1980 and 1982.
In 1975, he launched the poetic series 'Douwe Dabbert' with scripts by Thom Roep. This series eventually became his main activity. With this series, Wijn returned to the world of fantasy that he loved to depict. In 1984 Piet Wijn won the De Stripschapsprijs, the most prestigious prize for comics in Holland.
In the mid 1980s, he drew the comic strip 'Joker' for the magazine Ezelsoor. Due to a stroke in 1987, the final episodes of 'Joker' were drawn by Jan Wesseling, and Wijn had to leave the production of the daily 'Panda' strip to Frits Godhelp. Wijn was partially paralyzed, but taught himself to draw with his lefthand, which enabled him to continue 'Douwe Dabbert' throughout the 1990s. When a second stroke forced him to quit drawing completely, the final episode of 'Douwe Dabbert' was finished by Dick Matena. 23 books of the comic were published between 1975 and 2001. Piet Wijn passed away in Leidschendam on 6 October 2010.
